Blog Information

A blog created out of posts from the Studio Dink old and new forums before they were closed. As I never used a blog previously, I felt this would be a better way to preserve the experiences I went through and document the help and support I received from the forum.

Part 1

Current comments will be highlighted.

"Drawn and scanned, then coloured on Photoshop CS3.
Criticism very welcome ;)"
I scanned at 300dpi, cleaned and coloured in Photoshop CS3 Extended with an Intuos 1 Wacom Tablet.

"Blaze from 'Bare Knuckle Mobile'"
'Bare Knuckle: Mobile' had just launched in Japan around this time, or had been announced, I forget. Either way, it inspired much 'Streets of Rage' fan-based artwork from me at the time.

"Stage Design screenshots (characters not mine). Running in 'Streets of Rage: Remake''s Level Editor."
Work like this was the type of work that got me into working on 'Streets of Rage: Remake' on a few of the level backgrounds and objects. I love low-res pixel art, and the 'Streets of Rage' series had a beautiful way of making it's artwork look so detailed with so few colours and screen-space, especially when compared with other games of the time that appeared to put nothing like as much effort into the graphics as this series did in my opinion; especially 'Streets of Rage 3', we started to see the first hints of reflective or global illuminated colour on the characters themselves with the use of a dark grey as a base colour.

"Drawn from observation of a greyscale photo. (Colours improvised)."
I never did get exactly what kind of atmosphere I was aiming for in the piece. It should have been far more contrasting, with colder shadows. Shame about the anatomy being so off in so many areas too :(.

"Mr.X and Shiva from 'Streets of Rage: Remake'. Drawn to the PC using Photoshop CS3 and Intuos 1 Graphics Tablet."
This piece took me a long time, about 10 - 12 hours if I remember rightly. It was around 3000px in width, with a lot of detail added in. However whenever I would show it to people, they would always say "Is it supposed to be cold in there?". I'm sure it came from a comment I had previously made on the Bomber Games forum about how bad-ass Mr.X would look if he had his arms folded as well as Shiva. Still, there is so much wrong with this piece, both in terms of lighting, surface material qualities, details, not to mention anatomy....

"Rudra from 'Streets of Rage: Remake'. Drawn to the PC using Photoshop CS3 and Intuos 1 Graphics Tablet."
People told me my women always looked butch. I never really saw it (and thus couldn't figure out how to fix it), but now I see it so clearly....

"Original Character"

"A friend, drawn in pencil ranges from H - 4B."

"New style, more like SDink's old one."
I started following more closely yo SDink's style, using less tones, and using a white gradient on parts of the scene that were further from the 'camera'. The same goes for the image below also.

"New style, more like SDink's old one."

"I've been working on faces due to the constructive criticism now. I've learnt a few new tricks to help plan them out in drawings, and I'm pretty sure I've improved the balancing of the eyes better now."
I went through a phase of drawing lot of 600px X 600px images of faces of both people I know, and made-up characters to try and improve my facial anatomy skills. Moreover, I just needed a better way of planning out faces to make sure all the pieces lined up better and more coherently.

"With this piece I've tried to employ both SDink's style and Falcoon's. Its only a small piece, but I like the way it turned out."
Another artist that was suggested to me by SDink to examine for help was Falcoon. His work was fairly similar to SDink's, but often held much more angular representations of anatomy, which actually helped me to understand a lot of it much easier; it was like it was broken down into squared shapes, making it very easy to see how perspective and orientation were changing what was seen. (That's the best way I can think of describing it).

"All criticism accepted! I'm still very much learning obviously and I need to improve, so even if its a small mistake, especially anatomically, please point it out and say how it should be. Thanks! :D"

"I love the coloring style. It's vibrant."

"Your face angle look off on most of them. Like their head will be turned one way, but their face still looks as if its facing you. Maybe try the spacing from the nose, and the nose pointing direction, like from front the eyes will be spaced from nose about the same, but if someone is looking to your right, their left eye will be closer to the nose than the other. But besides that, there is a bit improvement so far."

"Hey Ricky, just wanted to say that I am proud of you and i wish I had even a small percent of your drive and motication ^_^ keep up the good work!"
From my most favourite artist and idol in the world! <3 SDink! So inspiring!!
